After charring the wood, the challenge was to control the final appearance. The carbonized layer defines both protection and aesthetics. Removing too much affects durability, while leaving too much limits the visual effect. The process needed to be precise, consistent, and suitable for different shapes and sizes.
A brushing solution was developed to process all four sides in a single pass. Tynex brushes were selected for their balance between strength and control. Adjustable side brushes allow for different geometries, including radiused parts. Parameters such as speed, pressure, and rotation direction can be easily adjusted and stored. An integrated dust extraction system and air knife ensure a clean surface for the next step.
The customer now has full control over both the process and the final appearance. The wood shows a strong, consistent grain pattern while maintaining its protective properties. The workflow is efficient, flexible, and repeatable, perfectly suited for high-end Shou Sugi Ban applications.
